Alan will talk about his exciting work with the NASA space program of 43 years where he served as navigation flight controller for all Apollo lunar landing missions and for Space Shuttle rendezvous missions, before retiring in 2010. His presentation will also reference many of the space program heros. Alan joined Space Center Rotary in 1975 and has been involved in Rotary Youth Exchange for 33 years. He was Youth Exchange Officer for District 5890 for 20+ years, served as Chair of RI Rotary Youth Exchange 2013/14, and is currently serving as RYE Mentor for D5890.
A graduate of Kilgore High School and Texas Tech University, Alan met his wife, Gaye, through Rotary Youth Exchange. They’ve been married for 14 years and are proud parents of 6 children and 12 grandchildren. Alan is an avid golfer and member of University of Baptist Church. e-Club of Houston member, Wind Nguyen, reports on having a great time this weekend meeting other Rotarians at Austin's beautiful Horseshoe Bay Resort for the 2021 Rotary District 5890 Conference.

Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh: Among his many achievements, Prince Phillip, spouse of Queen Elizabeth, II, was an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Windsor and Eton and also Windsor St George. Until about five years ago, the Duke would attend meetings in ‘his’ club and refused to be treated differently to any other Rotarian. He was also a committed environmental campaigner and wildlife advocate, becoming president of the World Wildlife Fund (UK) in 1961.
The Otto and Fran Walter Foundation has pledged $15.5 million to The Rotary Foundation to start a Rotary Peace Center in the Middle East or North Africa. The new center will offer a professional development certificate program focused on peacebuilding and development issues in the region. This generous gift from the Walter Foundation, which is based in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, USA, will fund the center’s startup costs and operating expenses, as well as an endowment that will provide peace fellowships in perpetuity for up to 40 students to study there each year.
